Genealogical Crime Mystery Writing Course FAQs

When does the course run?

The new course begins on Tuesday 4th March 2025 and runs every Tuesday for 7 weeks, ending on Tuesday 15th April. The live element, which will last around 1 hour, will be delivered via Zoom at 8pm UK time. We have tried to factor in as many timezones as possible! Here is a timezone converter.

Will the live element be recorded?

Yes! It will be recorded and placed in the students' program area.

Do I have to attend the live sessions?

No, all materials, including the playback of the session will be added to the website. However, the students who managed to attend most of the live sessions got the most from the course, so attendance is advised if possible.

How much does the course cost?

The cost â€‹will be £397.

What does the course cover?

The program is subject to change. However, it will cover all the basics of the genre, including setting, characterisation, dialogue and using genealogy in fiction.

How much time do I need to give the course?

The live element will be around one hour. After this, you will be expected to complete a writing task before each next lesson. This won't need to take more than an hour, but you are free to take longer.

Who is leading the course?

The course will be led by author, Nathan Dylan Goodwin, who has published many books in this genre. He is also a qualified teacher with a masters degree in creative writing.

I have no writing experience, does this matter?

Nope! Nathan will guide you through every step of the way.

How much feedback can I expect on my writing?

Nathan will offer weekly feedback along with your peers, as you (optionally) share your work and then he will provide summative feedback on a final 5,000-word-limit submission at the end of the course. There will be opportunity for Q&A in each lesson as well as group feedback on your work.

Do I have to share my work with a group?

You don't have to, no, but peer review is very helpful to the writing process, so we would encourage sharing. The course website has a feature where you can do this. This proved to be a very valuable part of the pilot course.
